The Bread & Butter Project
Bourke Street Bakery’s biggest community effort has been to dream up and implement The Bread & Butter Project – Australia’ first social enterprise bakery.
We dedicated our wholesale potential to start this exciting venture, which has been operating since 2013. An entirely separate entity to us, The Bread & Butter Project has DGR status and a board of directors. Bourke Street Bakery has devoted themselves tirelessly and voluntarily to make The Bread & Butter Project a success. One hundred per cent of the profits are reinvested into improving the lives of those least privileged in our community through an onsite TAFE accredited, paid training program for refugees and asylum seekers.

Bourke Street Bakery is also committed to environmental sustainability. We are the first business in Australia to own our own Closed Loop environmental waste system. This means all organic waste is processed and within twenty-four hours is converted into compost that we give away to our customers. By baling cardboard waste and careful ordering we are as close to waste neutral as possible.
We’ve installed enormous silos to store our flour supplies, so there’s no more flour packaging or carbon-intensive road trucks hauling in our flour each week. Our native garden is irrigated with recycled grey water and up on our roof at HQ you’ll find our five busy bee hives which produce all the honey for our bakeries.
Nothing goes to waste at Bourke Street Bakery. We donate all our leftover stock to local food charities such as Ozharvest, Father Johns, Wayside Chapel and Parramatta Mission.
